Opened in 1874 as the Midlothian and Peeblesshire County Asylum in response
to pressure on bed occupancy in nearby Musselburgh and Edinburgh, Rosslynlee Hospital
was one of the last of the little purpose-built Victorian asylums which
dot the Scottish landscape. The psychiatric services started to move to community-based
provision as early as the mid-1960s This was filmed on a bleak midwinter day in January 2007, a couple of months before closure of the adult (under-65's) ward. Parts of the hospital were already derelict, but enough survived to give a good impression of life at Rosslynlee, with a theatre, a farm and spacious grounds. The remaining wards finally shut in September 2010, and the building and grounds are up for sale. |
