A NICE WEE PRESENT FROM SCOTLAND
G.J GIBSON "RAMSHACKLE" (SQUEAK AUDIO)
RELEASED? Out now.
SOUNDS LIKE? It turns out that G.J Gibson is the guitarist from Dancing Mice and we like them and "Ramshackle" comes with more a series of caveats than a press release, so it's looking good; It's sounding pretty spanking as well as "Scunner In The Summer" sees a madly snappy and gloriously plastique guitar riff dragging poor old G.J into some vocal over extension, it's more Kinks than Shampoo and it'll take a while for the riff to bounce it's way out of the average skull, so far so neat, onwards and sidewways and we discover that G.J is a better guitarist when he's loosened up and comfortable in the more, ahem, ramshackle style and we also find that he really has listened to a lot of Ray Davies, probably including the solo album "Other People's Lives" that "Ramshackle" pisses all over. In the first place, this is a guitar album and although snaggy riffs and strong melodies abound, it's the oddments, like the wah-wah backwash on "Chip Shop Blues" or the Zal Cleminson style spikes and wrangles on "Your Plagal Cries". The favourite? That's got to be "Davey Jones' Locker", the one that's more Ivor Cutler than anything else in it's faltering, fucked up rhythms.
IS IT ANY GOOD? Yes. That's it. "Ramshackle" is good by any measure, no go hear it.
